Everything Bagel Cheese Straws combine all the flavors from a classic everything bagel with the crunchy, flaky cheese straw snack. These cheese straws are made with puff pastry and Asiago cheese and sprinkled with poppyseeds, sesame seeds, dried onion, and garlic.

Have you ever tried cheese straws? If you love cheese and pastries (and who doesn’t?) I’m sure you’ll love them.

A good cheese straw is light, flaky and slightly crunchy with lots of tangy cheese flavor. They’re often served with soups and sandwiches at bakeries. What Are Cheese Straws?

If you’re not familiar with cheese straws, they’re basically strips of pastry dough twisted together with cheese in a straw-like shape.

(No, they’re not drinking straws, alas! I know everyone’s looking for alternatives to plastic straws these days, but please don’t try sticking a cheese straw in your soda glass! It will not go well for you.)

Baking the cheese straws makes them puffy, light and golden brown. They’re delicious on their own, served with a bowl of Hearty Minestrone Soup, or alongside a bowl of Spicy Five Bean Chili.

These Everything Bagel Cheese Straws would also be an awesome addition to your next cheeseboard.

For all the parents sending kids back to school this fall, Everything Bagel Cheese Straws would also make a perfect breakfast pastry to eat on the go. My one note is that these are best served the same day they’re made, so it’s not a recipe I’d put on my Make Ahead Meals list.

Easy Homemade Cheese Straws

You probably know by now that simple dinners and quick snacks are kind of our thing around here. I believe you shouldn’t have to choose between delicious, homemade food and meals that are easy to make.

Maria and I are on the same page with that. Her blog and cookbook are both packed with incredible exciting recipes that are easy enough for weeknights.

These Everything Bagel Cheese Straws are a great example of how much fun it is to combine two different foods (everything bagels and cheese straws) and put them together to make something special.

The everything bagel seasoning makes perfect sense for a cheese straw recipe. The garlic and onion go oh-so-well with the Asiago cheese and the nuttiness of the seeds added a satisfying layer of texture.

They also look gorgeous with those little specks of black sesame seeds and white poppy seeds, don’t you agree?

Puff Pastry Cheese Straws

Some cheese straw recipes require you to make your own pastry dough from scratch. That’s all well and good but who among us has that kind of time on our hands on an average Wednesday?

While I’m all in favor of the occasional baking project, I can’t get enough of recipes that let me have homemade baked goods without having to devote hours upon hours to the recipe.

This recipe calls for ready-made frozen puff pastry dough and I couldn’t have been happier with it. Simply thaw according to package directions and go!

From start to finish these homemade cheese straws took just slightly more than 30 minutes.

Puff Pastry Cheese Straw Recipe

After rolling out the puff pastry, you cut it into even strips. Whisk an egg and brush it over each strip of dough (this helps the seasonings stick to the cheese straws).

The everything bagel seasoning in this recipe is a combination of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, black sesame seeds (if you can find them), dried garlic and dried onion. Some stores also sell ready mixed Everything Bagel seasoning which works super well in this recipe, too.

Sprinkle Asiago cheese over the dough strips, then sprinkle your everything bagel seasoning over the dough, lightly pressing it into each strip.

To give the cheese straws a spiral shape, you twist the ends of each strip in opposite directions. It’s really neat how easy it is to make that pretty twisty shape!

After a few minutes in the oven, you have a delicious savory pastry. I already know this is going to be a recipe I make many more times!

Everything Bagel Cheese Straws

Everything Bagel Cheese Straws are about as easy as can be and they’re completely irresistible too. Recipe lightly adapted from the Two Peas & Their Pod cookbook

Ingredients 

  • ▢1 tbsp all-purpose flour, for dusting
  • ▢2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  • ▢1 egg
  • ▢4 ounces Asiago cheese, finely shredded, about 1 cup
  • ▢2 tsps poppy seeds
  • ▢2 tsps sesame seeds
  • ▢2 tsps optional: black sesame seeds (these can be hard to find, it’s okay to skip them, if you can’t source them)
  • ▢1 1/2 tsp dried garlic
  • ▢1 1/2 tsp dried onion

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats. Lightly flour a large cutting board or clean countertop. Roll out each sheet of pastry to approximately 10×12 inches.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the surface of the pastry with the egg mixture. Sprinkle each sheet evenly with the cheese, about 1/2 cup per sheet.
  • Stir together the spices and sprinkle them over the pastry sheets. With a rolling pin, lightly press the cheese and seasonings into the puff pastry. Using a sharp knife, or pizza cutter, cut each sheet into strips about 1-inch wide.
  • Transfer each strip to the lined baked sheet, placing them an inch apart, and twisting the ends in opposite directions to “spiral” each of the cheese straws. If the dough gets too warm and sticky, you can put one tray in the refrigerator while working with the other.
  • Bake the straws for 15 minutes, until puffed and lightly browned. Turn each straw over and bake an additional 5 minutes, until golden brown, crispy, and dry to the touch. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes. Serve the same day they’re made.

Notes

2 tablespoons of Everything Bagel seasoning mix can be substituted for the spices listed in this recipe.Parmesan or Pecorino Romano may also be substituted for the Asiago cheese in this recipe.
